Extracurricular interests

Children and youths are encouraged to do, in their free time, a couple of recreational activities, including going to the cinema, doing sports, play music, read books.

At national level, students in the primary school, but also in the first high school classes show high interest for organizations, clubs and associations targeted for their categories of age. Participation in sporting activities organized by non-governmental organizations for children and youths is a social enterprise with great perspectives for children in Romania.

One of the objectives of the educational authorities is to create a framework that allows children and youths to join not-for profit organizations, clubs and foundations. These efforts are supported both by the governmental and local authorities. Usually these activities are started by centers for social activities or not-for-profit organizations concerned with involving children in educational activities.

By taking part to such activities, youths enhance their abilities to interact socially and gain new knowledge. Also, children show their creativity, show leadership abilities, civic sense, and learn mutual respect.

Local authorities plan on attracting money for supporting recreational activities. There are several laws supporting such activities.

Advice for parents

The family needs to know the child's personality and fulfill his basic needs since birth. As a parent, one needs to:

  • to hid his own pains and aggressive behavior, which need not to appear in the relationship with the child;
  • to follow the child's development to have a complete perspective of how she/he sees the world
  • to show the child when he is right or wrong by using appreciation and encouragement;
  • to become a partner of the school in the education of her/his child;
  • to take part in the decisions concerning the child's education;
  • to understand and support the school's development plan;
  • to accept the development of the child individually;
  • to involve in organizing extracurricular activities;

The parent needs to help her/his child and love her/him for what she/he is, not for what she/he could become.

In school, the child is involved in several individual or group activities, which need to be continued at home. In this spirit, at least one of the family members needs to come periodically to school to follow up on the child's current activities and their utility.

Communication with the school is maintained:

  • by using a daily notebook to communicate (the grade book);
  • reading information about the child's daily schedule and his behavior;
  • by attending parents' meetings;
  • attending evaluation sessions and writing development objectives at least twice a year;
  • making school visits at teachers' request or by their own will;
  • accepting teachers' visit at home;
  • taking part to educational and extracurricular activities (trips, visits);
  • taking part to scientific activities: courses, communication sessions;
