The place where the Romanian Athenaeum was built used to belong to the Văcăreşti family. In 1886 the construction began, parts of the funds coming through public subscription, under the slogan „Give one Leu for the Athenaeum ".
In 1935, George Enescu had the initiative of raising funds for the concert organ, placed in the back of the scene.
The Romanian Athenaeum was consolidated from 2000 to 2004 and reopened in 2005, on the 17th edition of the George Enescu International Festival.
