Băneasa RECL manager teaches locals how to become better parents

17.01.2012

The manager of RECL Băneasa Mariana Şerban, teacher by profession, attended the parental training called “How to become better parents”. The workshop was organised in the second part of November in Constanța, as part of a UNICEF campaign. In the future, she wants to share the information with locals in Băneasa (Constanţa County). The meetings will take place at the Public Access Point to Information (PAPI).

With a rich educational background acquired during years of work with pupils of the local Secondary School, RECL manager Marian Șerban knows how difficult it is for parents to communicate with children and understand their thoughts and desires. This is why she attended the courses organised as part of a UNICEF 2010-2011 campaign called „Come to school”, taking place with Constanța. Șerban was joined by three other colleagues.

„The training was also attended by teachers Viorica Florina Vişan, from the Făurei Secondary School and teachers Mariana Bucur and Cristiana Neamţu from Băneasa High School. In the end, we signed a contract saying we will host our own parental training classes, using the HOLT ROMANIA – FCSSCF curriculum. The accreditation we received is valid until November 19th, 2012”, the RECL manager says.

PAPI to host the training

Since the Public Access Point to Information (PAPI) is the perfect spot for training, thanks to its equipment, the RECL manager decided to invite the 20 parents there.

The training will probably begin right after the winter holidays. In the meanwhile, RECL manager Mariana Șerban and her colleague will create a working strategy. „First we will try to identify their need and then adapt our curriculum as such. We will teach them how to communicate with their children and how to understand them better. As we all know, children have their world and a totally different language from adults. We wish to have parents learn more about the options they have in guiding children and win more self-confidence as people and parents”, Șerban explains.

Improving the school-parents-pupils relationship, a main goal

When working as teachers, the training’s organisers have often had to deal with parents who did not involve themselves in their child’s educational path. They hope to take down such barriers as may exist between teachers, parents and children, so that the trio which is fundamental is a child’s upbringing – school, home and society – could work much better.

“The problem we have identified is that parents seldom get involved in the children’s home activities. Maybe they don’t have the time or skills to help. By offering parents the capacity of offering and receiving information that will help them become aware of positive alternatives, we can help them improve the quality of their lives. The programme focuses on the importance of parents and their strong suits. The basic principles of the programme appreciate, respect and support parents”, the RECL manager concludes.
