Romania’s export potential estimated at 100,000 tons of pork
17.01.2012
Romania’s potential for the export of pork meat could be at least 100,000 tons, but the country is still waiting for the European Commission’s approval to restart exports in the community market, Agriculture Minister Valeriu Tabără says. „Getting approval to restart pork exports will benefit not just pig breeders in Romania, but also meat processors, who will able to buy pork on the internal market and export finished products. There will also be a great impact on grain consumption and slaughter houses construction”, Tabără explains.
Romania will be able to export pork in EU countries starting on January 1st, 2012, following a unanymous decision of member countries. Taking down this commercial barrier imposed during the swine flu epidemic might generate EUR 600 mln to 1 bln in revenue, according to estimates of the domestic meat industry. So far, several farms in western Romania – in the counties of Timis, Caraş-Severin, Arad and Bihor, have asked to export pork on the EU market.
