Prolonging until December 31st 2013 the transition period for aligning to community regulations regards raw cow milk produced in Romania has saved some one million cattle, says the president of Romania’s Sanitary, Veterinary and Food Safety Authority (ANSVSA), Radu Cheţan-Roatiş. According to him, beneficiaries of the measure include farmers who own small numbers of animals who can sell their milk for about a year, as well as processing facilities which can keep working and selling the respective products in Romania. Also, existing jobs are saved and new ones created, the number of cattle being raised can be increased and, in essence, the measure will avoid undesired social and economic benefits.
According to the ANSVSA, 80% of milk coming from Romanian cattle breeders respects EU regulations. At the end of the year, 19% for raw cow milk delivered to processing units will not be able to conform to EU quality requirements (total number of germs/ml and total number of somatic cells/ml).
