According to a diagnostic study regarding school dropout and early abandonment of school in rural areas, being in a disorganised family, lack of parental education, parental negligence, lack of a job or excessive alcohol consumption are all factors with powerful impact on a child’s school track.
The study shows that children coming from such environments tend to follow parental models and ideas, according to which education is not a priority, and going to school does not increase the change of a better future.
Poverty is another cause of school dropout. There two sides for this factor: either children do not come to school because parents cannot buy clothes, supplies or transport, or they need to work themselves and have no time for learning.
Lack of communication between parents and teachers or parents and children, parents leaving to work abroad and leaving children with people with less authority (grandparents or even neighbours) or the negative influence of the peer group are other causes for dropping out.
The study was carried out at the request of the Soros Foundation in 42 rural localities in the counties of Brăila, Buzău, Călăraşi, Harghita, Neamţ, Prahova and Suceava.
