3D educational project in three schools from the KEP Mureș network
18.01.2012
| Pupils of three secondary schools in Luduş, Iernut and Gheja (Mureş County) are currently involved in an IT educational project called „360 degrees”, meant to create a 3D interactive presentation of the Sighișoara Fortification. RECL employees say that the success of such activities is proof that the general objective of the Knowledge-Based Economy Project has been reached. |
Secondary School nr. 1, Luduș
In Luduș, the project talkes place in the Secondary School nr.1, where seventh and eighth graders coordinated by IT teacher Adrian Olaru are involved. They are partnering with secondary schools in the city of Iernut and a locality which is part of Luduș, Gheja. The purpose is to participate in the national stage of the Educational Projects Competiton. The schools in Luduș and Gheja are part of the RECL network created through the Knowledge-Based Economy Project.
For RECL employees, the success of such projects represents the materialisation of the main objectives of the KEP. „In its essence, the Knowledge-Based Economy Project promotes the use and expansion of information technology. The RECL network includes two schools – the Secondary School no. 1 and the Gheja Secondary School. By having such activities the purpose of the KEP was achieved”, the RECL manager in Luduş, Adina Stoica, says.
Interactive presentation of the Sighişoara Medieval Fortress
Pupils are working in their respective school, in especially equipped labs. The team’s project is made up of 30 pupils and four teachers. “We created an interactive presentation of the Sighișoara Medieval Fortress. We started from 1,000 photos which are a two dimensional and temporary snapshot and turned them in a 3D format, so that the fortress can be explored in all three dimensions through panoramas, 3d photos and models”, IT teacher Adrian Olaru says.
The fortress in Sighișoara was chosen because it’s in Mureș County and it is on the list of UNESCO heritage sites. Virtual tours are composed of some 20 spherical interactive panoramas, interconnected, which allow 360 angle views of various locations. „The map allows users to zoom in and out, and by clicking on special interest points one goes to a different panorama. Some 38 to 80 individual pictures created with a regular camera are used for each such panorama. However, the camera is set on a special tripod we created. All pictures were assembled by children in special software. We created three such virtual tours: Sighișoara by day, Sighișoara by night and four views with the Clock Tower from all its sides”, Adrian Olaru says.
A 70-page book about the Medieval Fortress was also written, with rich illustrations. It will be distributed in partner schools.
Representatives of the school in Luduș are expecting very good results following this project. „The IT lab is one of the best equipped in the county, thanks to a project in partnership with the Teachers’ House. Our children compete in School Olympics at Romanian, Math, Physics, Chemistry, Hungarian language, Geography. They have had very good results, event at a country level”, the principal of the Secondary School nr. 1 Luduș, Cornelia Căpușan, says.
