Comic strip edited by RECL Sângeorgiu de Pădure
17.11.2011
| RECL Sângeorgiu de Pădure (Mureş) reedited, in English, a comic book, designed to focus on environmental issues in a fun way. „Attention! Message coming in from Mars!” first saw the light of day two years ago, the comic strip being at the time in Hungarian and Romanian. |
RECL manager Istvan Menyhart says the target group of the English version will be composed out of foreign schools and associations, with whom PAPI is in touch following European programmes such as Comenius and Youth in Action.
„Of course, the message cannot reach all the corners of the world with the print edition, so we decided to post a browsable flash version on our site. What did we get out of this deal? Financially, nothing, but morally we hope to have 500 new friends for our project”, Istvan Menyhart says.
The initial idea
The first edition of the book was published two years ago following an idea which sprung up during the activity of the “Sfântul Gheorghe” School Group in Sângeorgiu de Pădure. The publication can be downloaded from http://www.edtarnave.eu.
„Several years ago a physics teacher had the inspiration to write an direct, with the children in her class, a theatre play designed to focus on environmental issues in a fun way. Although the play was a hit, its message was hard to disseminate to other communities. RECL Sângeorgiu de Pădure came up with the idea to create a comic strip from the play, which we managed to do after many sleepless nights and with the support of dedicated partners”, the RECL manager says.
So, two years ago, the comic strip „Attention! Message coming in from Mars!” saw first light of day in two versions: Romanian and Hungarian. The success led to new questions being asked: is it comparable to other such publications written in international languages? Wouldn’t it be better for the public at large to know this comic strip? Could we translate to English? Could we justify the expenses for translation, editing and printing? Is there a clear target group?
“After we said yes to all these questions a long time was needed to find the funds. And we did it! As proof, we now have the printed English comic strip”, Menyhart says.
The target group of the English version will be composed of school and associations from abroad, which the “Sfântul Gheorghe” School Group connected with following European programmes like Comenius and Youth in Action. Partners in various school projects will receive the magazine, printed in great quality conditions.
