Romania and all other EU member states will not be allowed to sell eggs stamped with the number 3, signifying hens were raised in unimproved cages. The new measure comes into effect on January 1st, 2012.
The president of Romania’s Sanitary, Veterinary and Food Safety Authority (ANSVSA), Radu Cheţan-Roatiş, says the country has 29 exploitation which currently do not respect European poultry regulations, although 18 of them announced they will make the transition by the end of 2011.
Other 9 exploitations will make the necessary investments by July 2012, and only two will be closed. ANSVSA president stated all eggs stamped with the number 3 which will not be sold by the end of the year will be used in industrial processes.
