The commune's administrative territory Iara occupies a surface of 14 387,48 hectares.
The contact hollow Iara, situated ˆin the central and northern part of the commune, is carved ˆin sediments dominant palaeogene of„Iara-Băişoara Gulf” and is contoured ˆin upstream of the pass Surduc.
Muntele Mare Mountain is present through the eastern extreme ˆin Ocoliş area, and Trascău Mountains are present in extensions of the East, South-East and south of the commune.
The commune's neighbors are: to the West Băişoara (the center village and Muntele Băişorii village), to the North Ciurila commune, respectively Filea de Sus, Filea de Jos villages and Şuţu village; to the North-East Petreşti commune with Petreştii de Sus, Plaiuri and Livada village; to the East Moldoveneşti commune, and to the South Ocoliş commune belonging to Alba County.
History
According to the composing villages, Iara commune is documentary certified in several historic documents starting with the Middle Ages when there were two village under the name of Iara: Iara de Sus and Iara de Jos.
