It is a city with strong impressions of the rustic style, which are easily visible from the architecture of the houses that have become historical monuments. The villages that belong to it are Blahniţa de Jos, Cărbunesti Sat, Cojani, Creţeşti, Curtean, Floreşteni, Macesu, Pojogeni, Rogojeni, Ştefăneşti.
Târgu Carbunesti City is in the south-east of Gorj county, where the Getic Plateau and the sub-Carpathian area of Oltenia join, at the southern limit of the intra hill depression Câmpu Mare Târgu-Jiu. The predominant altitude of these forms of relief is 250-390 m, the minimum altitude is of 110 m (Gilortului Meadow) and the maximum is of 480 m.
