Community: Gârda de Sus

Gârda de Sus commune is located upper Arieşului Mare, in the heart of the Apuseni Mountains on the foot of Biharia, the highest and most massive top from the Western, dominated by Curcubăta Mare top (1849 m). The villages from Gârda de Sus placement fits the characteristic area of Apuseni Mountains being separated in groups of three to ten houses that form a hamlet or in groups of ten to eleven houses to which the hamlets are added forming a village. To this date, the commune has 17 villages in its administrative component and a surface of 8.211 hectares. Gârda de Sus teritorry, a tourist place of local interest and part of the Natural Park Apuseni, represents am important area with karstique mountaineous landscape, with a well preserved bio-diversity, with a specific tourism and of high quality, with a means of durable usage of the resources and an infrastructure that supports durable development.

Gârda de Sus commune, being located in the heart of Apuseni Mountains, has many tourist and cultural objectives, on the commune's territory being 10 landscapes that were declared natural reserves as well as many karstique formations (caves, quay). In Gârda de Sus ca be found Gheţarul/Glacier Scărişoara Cave, a cave that shelters the greatest ice fosile deposit in the country (75.000 mc). It is a glacier of the static type, located at the bottom of an aven, representing the first cave ever to be declared in Romania a natural monument. From the commune'e centre stast most of the tourist area routes, so it could be said that Gârda de Sus is Apuseni Mountains "tourist centre".

History

Gârda de Sus commune appeared in 1923, as a consequence of spliting the actual communal territory from the one of Scărişoara's commune, due to some separation tendencies manifested by the village's Gârda de Sus rulers, village that used to belong to Scărişoara commune.
