Community: Ştefan cel Mare

Stefan cel Mare commune is located in Calarasi County, the county located in the south-eastern part of Romania, in the North of Calarasi city and is composed by one village, Stefan cel Mare village. As regards the communal relief, it is an entirely plain one, with relatively smooth surfaces, which locally tilt slightly to the South. In terms of climate, the area has a continental climate with excessive contrasts betwenn summer and winter. Flora and fauna is characteristic of the steppe. As concerns the existence of courses and mirrors of water, the data shows only the existence of plashies with reeds. The surface of Stefan cel Mare commune is 2559 hectares, out of which 215 hectares inside the village land and 2344 hectares outside the village. It was established as an administrative-territorial unit in 1931 bearing the name of Cocargeaua Nouă until 1942 when it took the name of Stefan cel Mare.

History

The commune's name, having although a particular historical resonance, has no connection with the Moldavian hero, and comes from the name of the colonization center to apply landlordship that followed after the First World War.

Traditions

Among the folk tradtions, very diverse due to the people's origins from several part of the country, were still preserved 'the plough', 'sorcova', Christmas' Eve, 'The Star', 'Floriile' (the celebrating of those with flower names; one week before Easter) and 'Urlălia'.
